Abraham Verghese: A Doctor’s Touch from TED Talks.
Modern medicine is in danger of losing a powerful, old-fashioned tool: human touch. Physician and writer Abraham Verghese describes our strange new world where patients are merely data points, and calls for a return to the traditional one-on-one physical exam.
Why can’t everyone watch this? This guy’s thoughts are just amazing and are basic common sense. It’s a shame that the world is becoming more “modernised” and changing itself. There are benefits but it is stopping important things like this. For god’s sake, it’s like people are being de - humanized, what happened to patient care?
This guy’s point is totally valid. Patients need to be cared for and treated as more than just data, they’re humans after all. However, traditions and rituals change. The world has always been adapting and changing as time passed. In general, I believe people are being less personal about the way things are handle. This is simply a result of new technology and lifestyle changes.
That aside, patients need to know people care about their wellbeing and are there for them. Human touch can do just that.
